A cat’s hilariously over-protective reaction to someone bothering their owner has left viewers in stitches on social media.
In the clip, a white and black cat by the name of Stacy, who lives in the Belarusian capital of Minsk can be seen responding angrily to a man aggressively tapping her human friend on the shoulder.
The footage was shared to TikTok by her owner posting under the handle mura_13. At the time of writing, it has been viewed more than 20 million times.
Cats may have a reputation for being aloof and wholly independent in the home, but studies indicate they may actually be far more bonded to their human owners than previously thought.
In fact, according to a 2011 study published by researchers from the University of Vienna, cats actually attach to humans as social partners rather than simply as a source of food.
The theory emerged from a series of tests that saw scientists film and then analyze the interactions of 41 cats and their owners over a four-part period. The behaviors of the two parties were noted while both the personalities of owners and cats were further assessed in a separate set of tests.
They concluded that both cats and their owners strongly influenced each other to the point that they were, at times, controlling one another’s behavior. Therefore, Stacy the cat’s reaction in the clip may actually be born out of her owner’s sense of frustration at being pestered.
It could be argued that the feline was simply acting as an extension of their owner’s desires in that particular situation to deal with the person bugging them.
While this all remains entirely theoretical, Stacy certainly appeared to stick up for her owner in the clip. When the person tapping her owner’s shoulder continues, unabated, the four-legged friend is only too happy to step in.
In a flash, Stacy lets out a well-timed yowl while simultaneously batting the unknown man’s hand away, as if telling him to get lost.
Her owner, to his credit, moves the cat away from the conflict before calming her down with a few well earned strokes. But he’s evidently impressed by her actions, sharing the clip alongside a caption declaring her “my personal security.”
He was not alone in expressing his admiration for her intervention, with fellow feline fans flooding the comments section on the video to praise Stacy.
Albin said, “that’s gangsta,” with parniayee adding, “that cat is a whole different vibe,” and Luko saying, “she is NOT playing.”
George Andrade was a big fan commenting: “She’s very protective of her daddy. That’s so sweet.”
Yousra Benaissa was similarly enamored, writing: “I’d be so proud having such a cat.”
