‘You came into my life on the second season of this show, we’ve been together for 17 years,’ Ellen said. ‘So with the show ending, you know, it’s actually a big thing for both of us … because you watched me go through everything with the show, but I learned today, which I didn’t know, there’s a story of [you] watching me the first show the first season.’

De Rossi recalled how she nervously watched the first Ellen show as a closeted actress at the time.

‘Ellen was kind of like the litmus test for young actors in Hollywood because we just, her success meant so much to us, it kind of meant, “Can I be authentic and honest and still be able to pay the rent?” I remember watching the first episode of the show standing the entire time and I remember, I was alone, I remember saying out loud to the TV, “She did it.”

‘Because you could just feel the magic – oh my gosh I’m emotional already – you could feel the magic of the show, and I just knew that it was going to be around for as long as you wanted it to be.’

DeGeneres recalled a story about how de Rossi’s grandmother changed her views on same sex relationships once they became a couple.

‘I think what’s amazing too, is that since we’ve been together, many things have changed – you came out by just being with me, that was your outing,’ she said. ‘Your story of telling your grandmother that you were with me is a beautiful story.’

De Rossi said that her grandmother was a huge fan of DeGeneres on her sitcom Ellen ‘until the episode where she came out.’

‘The minute Ellen came out she refused to watch the show; in fact, if a commercial for the show came on she would change the channel and say, “That disgusting woman” – so that didn’t bode well for me,’ de Rossi said.

She said that she moved to Los Angeles and started her career in show business, eventually returning to Australia on a visit where her grandmother asked her if she was ‘seeing anyone special.

‘At this point, my mom was supposed to have told gram that I was with Ellen,’ de Rossi said of her grandmother, who was ’99 at this point.’

De Rossi said she reminded her grandmother that she knew that she lived with DeGeneres, and her grandmother responded, ‘Yes, and all this time I was worried that that lesbian was hitting on my granddaughter.’

De Rossi said that her grandmother put her head in her hands and remained silent for a long period until she looked at her and told her, ‘I love you just the same.’

Said DeGeneres: ‘That was a beautiful thing, for someone at that age to have such strong feelings and then she just thought about it, “I love you just the same”… [de Rossi’s] mother had been taking care of her but it got to the point where she couldn’t take care of her anymore, so we put her in the best home care that we could provide for her … and she died at 103 with our wedding picture next to her bed.’

Ellen’s final show is slated to air May 26.
