2023 BMW X7 facelift revealed, confirmed for Australia

The facelifted BMW X7 gains the brand’s latest technology, upgraded safety tech, a new range of engines, and a bold new look that’s set to spread across BMW’s flagship models – including the 7 Series limo.


Tea 2023 BMW X7 has been revealed, ahead of an Australian launch due in the fourth quarter of 2022 (October to December).

Headlining the updates to BMW’s four-year-old luxury SUV flagship is a brand-new front fascia, debuting a set of split headlights – with the daytime-running lights up high, and main driving beams below, offering adaptive matrix LED technology – and ‘Iconic Glow’ illumination in the X7’s ‘kidney’ grilles.

This new split headlight fascia is set to spread across BMW’s flagship models, namely the next-generation 7 Series limousine that’s due for reveal next week. Models from the X5 large SUV and below will retain their current single-piece headlight arrangements.



New 3D-effect LED tail-light signatures feature on the facelifted X7, joining other design upgrades including restyled lower front and rear bumpers, the addition of 23-inch alloy wheels, and new paint colours, including M Marina Bay Blue metallic and Sparkling Copper Gray metallic.

Inside, the facelifted X7 adopts BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment technology, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central touchscreen into one curved glass panel.

It offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus augmented-reality navigation, a personal assistant, 5G connectivity, and support for a digital key through owners’ iPhones.



The lower dashboard has been redesigned with slimmer air vents and an ambient light bar in front of the passenger – with ‘X7’ or ‘M’ lettering, depending on variant – along with a restyled shift lever.

Standard features in Europe include heated front comfort seats, Merino leather upholstery (with vegan trim available in other regions), an illuminated panoramic glass sunroof, four-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker sound system.

Under the bonnet, three new engines will be available globally – though only two will be available in Australia at launch, the xDrive40d diesel and M60i petrol V8, replacing the current xDrive30d and M50i variants.



The xDrive30d diesel has been replaced by an xDrive40d for the 2023 facelift, powered by an upgraded version of its predecessor’s 3.0-litre turbo inline-six (codenamed B57), with outputs of 250kW/700Nm (up 55kW/80Nm). It’s said to be capable of a 0-100km/h dash in 6.1 seconds.

The old X7 M50i flagship has become the M60i, and ditches the outgoing car’s ‘N63’ V8 for BMW’s new 4.4-litre twin-turbo ‘S68’ V8 – developed for BMW M, and set to feature in the next M5 super sedan. Outputs remain pegged at 390kW/750Nm, however, despite the name change.

The performance flagship is capable of a 4.7-second claimed 0-100km/h sprint time, towards a top speed of 250km/h.



Overseas, an xDrive40i petrol model is available, debuting an updated version of BMW’s ‘B58’ 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine which now develops 280kW and 520Nm (up 30kW/70Nm). It’s good for a 5.8-second 0-100km/h dash.

All engines send drive to all four wheels through revised eight-speed automatic transmissions, which incorporate 48-volt mild-hybrid systems – a first for a BMW model in Australia, though these systems are already offered overseas – capable of providing a 9kW/200Nm boost under heavy loads.

Adaptive air suspension is standard under the skin, with the X7 M60i gaining rear-wheel steering and 48-volt active anti-roll bars as standard (though they’re optional on the inline-six models).



The safety suite has also seen upgrades, with 2023 updates including intersection support for the autonomous emergency braking system, a side exit warning system, a Reversing Assistant function that can remember and replay the last 200 meters traveled through a tricky space, and a trailer maneuvering system designed for low speeds.

Production of the 2023 BMW X7 is expected to begin this July, ahead of first arrivals in Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2022 (October to December).

The Australian range will launch with xDrive40d and M60i variants, replacing the current xDrive30d and M50i.
