Karl Stefanovic reels after brutal sledge from Nine’s political editor Chris Uhlmann

Today host Karl Stefanovic was on the receiving end of a brutal sledge by Nine’s political editor Chris Uhlmann on Tuesday morning’s show.

Stefanovic, 47, was discussing with Uhlmann how opposition leader Anthony Albanese was unable to state either the unemployment rate or the RBA cash rate at a disastrous press conference on Monday – the first full day of the election campaign.

As the pair debated how Albanese might recover from the gaffe, Uhlmann took a thinly veiled swipe at Stefanovic, saying: ‘It’s like when we all make mistakes, and when you make mistakes in broadcasting, Karl.’

‘You can’t dwell on it, because then the next performance is affected by that. You have to be able to get it out of your head,’ he added.

‘What do you mean? When I went to sleep interviewing you yesterday?’ Stefanovic joked, to which Uhlmann responded: ‘That was bad, I think that’s going to resonate through you career.

‘But when I think of some of the things you’ve done in your career, mate, I’m surprised you’re standing there!’

Stefanovic was quick laugh off the obvious sledge, replying: ‘Same, same, same! Don’t worry about that, you’re not the only one!’

‘It’s a mystery to us all!’ Uhlmann continued. ‘When I said the other day, this is like a biblical test. We are in the middle of Lent, it runs 40 days. That’s one of the numbers in the bible that recurs more than 100 times, 40 days spent in the desert.

‘This is a trial that’s going on right now, but there is the possibility of both crucifixion and then redemption at the end.’

He added: ‘We all know at the end of this 40 days who gets redeemed. Like you.’

Appearing taken back, Stefanovic responded: ‘Second comings and all that. We like that, don’t we?’

‘Ah, dear. It’s always better the second time around, Karl! See you, mate,’ Uhlmann replied.

As the segment ended, Stefanovic grumbled: ‘That’s it for him… for another day.’

While Uhlmann did not reference anything specific Stefanovic had done in the past, he appeared to be alluding to the host’s ‘redemption’ on the Today show.

Following scrutiny of his personal life and a slump in ratings, Stefanovic was dropped as host of Channel Nine’s breakfast show in December 2018 while he was on his honeymoon with wife Jasmine Yarbrough.

The highly publicized wedding to Yarbrough came two years after he split from first wife Cassandra Thorburn, a former Today show producer.

Their divorce saw Stefanovic’s popularity with female viewers plummet.

And in March 2018, Karl and his brother Peter Stefanovic were embroiled in the now-infamous ‘Ubergate’ scandal after their private phone conversation in a taxi was leaked to New Idea.

In the ‘b**chy’ 45-minute chat, Peter complained about his role on Weekend Today while Karl ‘angrily’ complained about his Today co-host Georgie Gardner, saying she needed to ‘step up… if she wanted to stay on the [Today] show’.

But despite the scandals, Stefanovic was brought back to Today in early 2020, and has remained a fixture alongside co-anchor Allison Langdon ever since.

The pair replaced Gardner and Deborah Knight after ratings fell off a cliff during their year-long tenure as co-hosts.
