Katie Maloney admits marriage to Tom Schwartz ‘wasn’t the healthiest’… after she filed for divorce

Katie Maloney admitted she had every good intention of making her marriage work to Tom Schwartz, but ultimately couldn’t make it work and filed for divorce on March 22 after three years of marriage and 12 years together.

‘I really thought that we were gonna make it work,’ she told Lindsey Metselaar on the We Met At Acme podcast. ‘I felt that we had overcome a lot together. I felt that we had grown together, and I thought that we would continue growing together. I was very optimistic.’

The 35-year-old Vanderpump Rules star began to realize toward the end of 2021 that despite doing her best, their relationship wasn’t salvageable.

‘I think we had both changed and grown apart, and that maybe this marriage wasn’t the healthiest thing for us,’ she said.

After fan speculation about their relationship due to lack of posts, they announced their amicable split on Instagram in mid-March. Just one week later, Katie filed for divorce citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’

‘I had been expressing my feelings and where I felt that I was not getting my needs met and where I thought I was being hurt by some of the behavior, and I don’t think he understood or resonated or agreed,’ she shared. ‘I understand you can’t really change a person, and I don’t necessarily want to.’

She realized it would have taken a ‘wakeup call [or] an epiphany’ for Tom to really realize what was at stake and that their relationship was flooding.

While Katie fessed up to being a ‘bad drunk’ and admitted she had her own faults after investing in herself to not only improve their relationship but also her image of self-worth, Maloney didn’t feel as though Schwartz was putting in any similar self-work.

Katie said there was no ‘last straw’ or ultimatum, and Schwartz ‘didn’t really do anything’ after hearing her feelings on their stand-still relationship as he simply thought that her concerns would pass with time.

‘I think he thought that I was just gonna get over it or something. And then — it was a couple weeks later — I had decided that I had wanted to get a divorce,’ she said while adding it was the best decision for everyone involved.

Schwartz ‘didn’t necessarily agree’ with Maloney’s decision, he also didn’t fight her about it.

And despite her recently single status, Katie said that she’s ready to jump back into the dating scene — albeit ‘the old-fashioned way’ and not through dating apps.

‘You would think that after being with someone for 12 years and all of this that you would not be ready for that, but I feel like I am and would be down for all of that,’ she said. ‘But, when you’re still living with your ex, it does present some obstacles, for sure.’

Katie and Tom found fame on Lisa Vanderpump’s spin-off show about a group of friends working at her popular SUR restaurant in West Hollywood, and their relationship was often a featured storyline on the series.

In season five, the couple had their dream wedding in the forest in Northern California, with Lisa officiating the ceremony, only to find out years later that Tom never filed the paperwork to legally certify their union.

On season eight, they whisked away to Las Vegas for the weekend and were officially married in 2019, once again by their boss, Lisa Vanderpump.

Their sex life, or lack thereof, was often discussed on VPR as they rarely admitted to being intimate with each other.

During one season eight episode in 2020 after a prank backfired where Jax Taylor and Randall Emmett orchestrated Tom Sandoval’s fake arrest for vandalism, Tom branded Katie ‘gross’ when she overreacted that the incident wasn’t even funny.

Schwartz screamed at her in front of the cast and cameras: ‘This is why I don’t have sex with her. You’re ruining a great moment. We’re laughing.’

He added: ‘That’s another two months we’re not having sex.’

During a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2019, Tom called Katie a ‘wet blanket’ after she spent hours rage-texting him on the airplane when he accepted a seat on first class while she sat in coach before they brought another one of their bitter feuds to the balcony of their hotel for all of their friends to hear.

Tom accused his wife of ‘putting a dampener on like 70 percent of the vacations we’ve been on together.’

He then accused his wife of having ‘the IQ of a 14-year-old’ and being ‘selfish’ for fighting so soon, and she insisted: ‘You have don’t have the wherewithal to say, “I’ve been as ***ty husband.”

‘Well, try being with as***ty f***ing wife for seven years,’ he replied.

Tom tried to make it up to Katie later on in the trip and brought all of her favorite snacks to their room in a bid to win her heart and possibly get intimate, but he later revealed they didn’t have sex that night.

‘We had every intention on doing so, but we were so tired and hungover from three days of just nonstop vacay mode, drinking, eating, minimal sleep,’ he said on the Vanderpump Rules After Show. ‘We just both passed out. But it was in a beautiful embrace. We made out a little.’

‘Although we may be on different paths we will continue to love and support one another’s happiness. Thank you for all the kind words and support.’

Tom shared a similar post online saying he ‘fully respected Katie’s decision’ to end their relationship and admitted it would be ‘far sadder’ for her to stay with him if she wasn’t happy.
