Sputnik reported Thursday that the Russian S-350 Vityaz surface-to-air missile (SAM) system managed to shoot down a Ukrainian aircraft in the area of special operations in fully automatic mode without operator participation.
The Russian S-350 system’s artificial intelligence (AI) missile is equipped to hit target aircraft such as fighters, missiles, and drones.
The S-350 Vityaz entered service with the Russian Armed Forces in 2019.
“For the first time in the world, Vityaz implemented automatic detection, tracking and destruction of Ukrainian air targets during combat. This surface-to-air missile shot down several Ukrainian warplanes and drones,” an unnamed source said.
He added that the automatic mode is implemented on the basis of the principle of non-reversal of the decisions of the artificial intelligence elements of the air defense system within the framework of an emerging air combat situation. In other words, the operator does not interfere with the operation of the system. The system confirms the operating algorithm specified by the device.
Vityaz can operate simultaneously in active and passive radar modes. This enhances its jamming immunity, as well as its ability to detect and classify targets.
The S-350 Vityaz has a maximum range of about 120 kilometers (75 miles) and can engage up to 16 targets at an altitude of 30 kilometers (18.5 miles).
