The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that the Ukrainian army and NATO accused Russia of blowing up the dam, while Russia blamed Ukraine.
Thousands of people in areas surrounding the dam are currently being evacuated, with fears the flooding could become catastrophic.
The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station is located in Nova Kakhovka, in the Kherson region of Ukraine, which is currently under Russian occupation.
This dam was built in the Soviet era and is one of six dams along the Dnipro River that runs from the northern part of the country to the sea in the south.
The huge river is called by the locals the Sea of Kakhovka because the other bank cannot be seen in certain places.
The Kakhova Dam contains water equivalent to that of Salt Lake in the US state of Utah, according to Reuters.
