Ukraine has carried out three successful attacks against Russian sites using long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Two Storm Shadow missiles were used in each attack, with six missiles reaching their targets. At the same time, Russian air defenses managed to intercept more than 10 missiles of the same type.
Successful attacks were carried out on May 12, May 14 and May 26. On May 14, the Armed Forces of Ukraine bombed a Russian flight school in Luhansk. Two Storm Shadow missiles were used, which in addition to destroying an aircraft, also killed nine Russian pilots. Two days later, the same Russian position was attacked again by two missiles of the same type. On May 26, the day before, two Storm Shadow missiles hit a missile depot in Mariupol.
Drop more than 10 missiles
However, Russia quickly adapted to the new threat. In fact, this is not the first time that Russia has encountered this missile. In Syria, the Russian Air Defense intercepted the Storm Shadow. According to Russian military expert Alexei Lenkov, the BUK and TOR systems in Syria successfully countered the British missile.
Russia intercepted Storm Shadow in the past two weeks as follows: one missile on May 15, seven missiles on May 16 [يوم إصابة باتريوت] an unknown number of Storm Shadows on May 20 and 22, and Two Missiles yesterday, on May 26.
Storm Shadow is designed to handle bunkers, infrastructure, and moving or stationary targets. The missile navigation system is a combination of INS, GPS and terrain tracking. The missile is more than 5 meters long and weighs about 1,300 kg. Powered by a jet engine, it has a range of more than 250 km. The warhead of the missile is explosive / penetrating.
The missile can provide superiority to Ukrainian warplanes during missions. Its ability to engage targets beyond visual range, combined with its low radar signature, makes it stealthy and difficult to spot and intercept. Last but not least, Storm Shadow flies at low altitudes, which helps it get past enemy radar.
